Terminal Box Fiber Optic Cable Termination

A Fiber Termination Box (FTB) is used to terminate, splice, and manage fiber optic cables, providing a secure interface between incoming cables and outgoing pigtails or patch cords.

Purpose of a Fiber Termination Box

A Fiber Termination Box serves as a centralized junction point in fiber optic networks, connecting incoming feeder cables to outgoing pigtails or patch cords. It protects fibers from bending, dust, and accidental handling, organizes cables to prevent entanglement, and ensures signal integrity by maintaining proper alignment and bend radius . FTBs are widely used in FTTH, FTTB, FTTC, and data center networks .

Components of an FTB

  1. Housing: Durable, impact-resistant casing, often with IP65/IP68 ratings for outdoor use, protecting internal components from environmental damage .
  2. Internal Components: Includes splice trays, fiber guides, and adapters for SC, LC, FC, or ST connectors .
  3. Fiber Protection Elements: Sleeves, cassettes, and guide posts to secure fibers and store excess lengths safely .

Types of Fiber Termination Boxes

  • Straight-through Terminal Box: Single entry for the incoming line.
  • Branched-type Terminal Box: Multiple entries for distributing fibers to several outputs.
  • Outdoor Fiber Distribution Terminals: Weatherproof boxes for small and medium-sized multi-dwelling units .
  • Rack-mounted or DIN rail-mounted FTBs: Suitable for high-density connections in telecom rooms or industrial environments .

Installation and Termination Process

  1. Preparation: Select a suitable location with easy access for maintenance. Gather tools such as fiber cleaver, stripper, fusion splicer, crimping tools, cleaning agents, and gloves .
  2. Cable Entry: Prepare the fiber cable ends according to supplier instructions. Pierce the rubber diaphragm at the box entry and route the fiber through guide posts .
  3. Splicing: Splice the incoming fiber to pigtails using fusion splicing inside the splice tray. Excess fiber is coiled and stored safely in the tray .
  4. Adapter and Connector Installation: Connect pigtails to adapters or patch cords, ensuring proper alignment to minimize signal loss .
  5. Securing and Labeling: Clamp fibers at entry points, label each fiber for identification, and close the box securely .

Best Practices

  • Maintain the minimum bend radius to prevent signal attenuation.
  • Keep fibers clean and free from dust or oils.
  • Ensure easy access to the front panel for future maintenance.
  • Use IP-rated enclosures for outdoor installations to protect against weather and unauthorized access . By following these steps, a Fiber Termination Box ensures reliable, organized, and protected fiber connections, supporting efficient network operation and maintenance.
