High-voltage busbars serve as the central point for connecting multiple high-voltage components, including transformers, circuit breakers, and capacitors, while minimizing power losses due to their large cross-sectional area . They can be installed indoors or outdoors depending on the system requirements and environmental conditions .

Role of a Potential Transformer (PT)

A potential transformer (PT), also known as a voltage transformer, is used to step down high voltage to a lower, standardized voltage suitable for measurement, metering, and protection devices . PTs ensure that instruments and protective relays receive accurate voltage signals without being exposed to the full high-voltage levels, enhancing safety and reliability.

PT Cabinet and Busbar Integration

A PT cabinet houses one or more PTs along with fuses, surge arresters, and other primary electrical components . The cabinet is typically metal-clad with observation windows for monitoring and may feature modular compartments separating primary and secondary circuits. The PT cabinet supplies voltage to the high-voltage busbar, enabling measurement, metering, and protection functions across the connected high-voltage equipment . Both measuring PTs and metering PTs can be installed in the same cabinet unless specific standards require separation .
