Understanding the Module

A PC817 optocoupler module uses an infrared LED on the input side and a phototransistor on the output side to transfer signals optically, maintaining electrical isolation between circuits . Each channel is independent, allowing different input and output voltages simultaneously. The input is active LOW, meaning the LED turns on when the input pin is connected to GND through your signal source . The output is typically open-collector, requiring a pull-up resistor to the output voltage.

Wiring Steps

  1. Identify Pins
    • Input side: VCC, GND, IN
    • Output side: VCC, GND, OUT
    • Each channel has an LED indicator that lights when the input is active .
  2. Connect Input Side
    • Connect VCC to the positive voltage of your signal source.
    • Connect GND to the signal source ground.
    • Connect the IN pin to the signal you want to monitor. When this pin is pulled LOW, the LED inside the optocoupler emits light .
  3. Connect Output Side
    • Connect VCC to the voltage level compatible with your microcontroller or load.
    • Connect GND to the microcontroller ground.
    • Connect OUT to the input pin of your microcontroller or the load. The output will go LOW when the input LED is active .
  4. Configure Jumpers
    • Some modules have a jumper that connects input and output grounds. Remove the jumper if you need full isolation.
    • Another jumper may enable on-board pull-up resistors on the output. Set this according to whether your microcontroller already has internal pull-ups .
  5. Verify Isolation
    • Ensure input and output VCC/GND are not connected, preserving isolation. Connecting them together defeats the optocoupler's purpose .

Optional: Using with Arduino

  • Connect the output OUT to a digital input pin on the Arduino.
  • Use a simple sketch to read the pin state and respond when the input signal is active.
  • The LED on the module provides a visual indication of input activity .

Tips

  • Choose appropriate current-limiting resistors for the input LED if not pre-installed.
  • Ensure the output pull-up resistor matches the logic voltage of your microcontroller.
  • Test each channel individually before connecting multiple channels to avoid wiring mistakes. By following these steps, you can safely and effectively wire a PC817 optocoupler quick-connect module while maintaining electrical isolation and proper signal conversion between circuits .
