Components and Functions of Relay Protection

The main components of relay protection are transducers (current and voltage transformers), protective relays, and circuit breakers.

1. Transducers (Current and Voltage Transformers)

Transducers act as sensors that detect abnormal electrical conditions in the power system. Current transformers (CTs) measure high currents and reduce them to safe levels for relay operation, while potential transformers (PTs) measure high voltages and provide isolated, standardized signals to the relay. These transformers ensure that the relay can monitor the system safely and accurately without being exposed to high voltages or currents directly .

2. Protective Relays

Protective relays are the decision-making units of the protection system. They continuously monitor electrical quantities such as current, voltage, frequency, and phase angle. When abnormal conditions like overcurrent, short circuits, or voltage deviations are detected, the relay evaluates the situation against preset thresholds or logic conditions and generates a trip signal. Relays can be electromechanical, static, or numerical, and may include features like time delays, directional sensing, and programmable logic for complex protection schemes .

3. Circuit Breakers

Circuit breakers are the interrupting devices that physically isolate the faulty section of the power system. When a relay issues a trip signal, the circuit breaker opens its contacts to disconnect the faulted segment, preventing damage to equipment and maintaining system stability. Circuit breakers can be operated manually or automatically and are coordinated with relays to ensure selective and reliable fault clearance .

4. Auxiliary Components

Auxiliary components include trip coils, auxiliary relays, and DC power supplies. Trip coils receive the relay signal and actuate the circuit breaker, while auxiliary relays may be used to handle higher currents or coordinate multiple breakers. Reliable DC power sources ensure that the trip circuit operates correctly even during system disturbances .

Summary

In essence, a relay protection system integrates sensors (CTs/PTs), protective relays, and circuit breakers, supported by auxiliary circuits, to detect faults, make decisions, and isolate faulty sections efficiently. This combination ensures system safety, equipment protection, and minimal service interruption during abnormal conditions .
