Functional Overview

Optical modules are essential in fiber optic communications, enabling optoelectronic conversion. At the transmitting end, the Transmitting Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA) converts electrical signals into modulated optical signals using a laser diode (LD) or LED, controlled by a driver circuit and an automatic power control (APC) system to maintain stable output power . At the receiving end, the Receiving Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA) converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals using a photodetector and preamplifier, often outputting PECL-level signals . Some modules integrate both functions into a Bi-Directional Optical Sub-Assembly (BOSA) for single-fiber bidirectional communication .

  • Short-range (≤2 km): Typically 850 nm multimode fiber.
  • Medium/long-range (>2 km): 1310 nm or 1550 nm single-mode fiber.
  • CWDM/DWDM modules allow multiple wavelengths over a single fiber for extended reach . 5. Wavelength and Interface
