Thickness of various cable tray models

Cable trays come in various types—ladder, perforated, solid-bottom, wire mesh, and channel—with specifications including width, depth, length, and material thickness tailored to load, environment, and cable type.

Cable Tray Types

  1. Ladder Cable Tray: Designed for heavy cable loads and long spans, ladder trays have open rungs for maximum heat dissipation and easy cable installation. They are ideal for power and solar DC runs where airflow is critical .
  2. Perforated (Trough) Cable Tray: Provides continuous bottom support with ventilation holes. Suitable for medium loads and applications requiring moderate heat dissipation .
  3. Solid-Bottom Cable Tray: Offers full support and protection for cables, minimizing dust and moisture accumulation. Best for sensitive or low-heat-generating cables .
  4. Wire Mesh (Basket) Tray: Lightweight, flexible, and easy to install. Ideal for light cabling, control, and communication systems .
  5. Channel Cable Tray: Narrow, enclosed design for small cable runs or aesthetic applications. Can be ventilated or solid-bottom .

Material Options

  • Metallic: Aluminum (lightweight, corrosion-resistant), Steel (strong, good shielding), Stainless Steel (high-temperature and corrosive environments)
  • Non-Metallic: Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) for chemical or wet areas, nonconductive and corrosion-resistant .

Standard Dimensions

  • Width: Nominal inside usable width ranges widely to accommodate small control circuits to large power cables. Wider trays improve airflow and reduce cable stacking .
  • Depth (Side Rail Height): Controls vertical stacking and NEC fill compliance. Increasing width often provides better capacity than increasing depth .
  • Length: Typically 2.5 m, 3 m, or 6 m depending on regional standards .
  • Rung Spacing (for ladder trays): Commonly 150–230 mm (6–9 inches) to balance support and airflow .

Material Thickness

  • Importance: Thickness affects load capacity, allowable span, and long-term durability. Two trays with identical width and depth can perform differently if thickness varies .
  • Typical Ranges:
    • Light-duty trays: 1.2–1.5 mm
    • Medium-duty trays: 1.5–2.0 mm
    • Heavy-duty trays: 2.0–3.0 mm or more, depending on span and load requirements .
  • Galvanization: For steel trays, zinc coating thickness varies by process (hot-dip or electro-galvanized) to enhance corrosion resistance .

Design Considerations

  • Ensure compatibility with cable type, load, and environmental conditions.
  • Follow NEC, NEMA, and IEC standards for sizing and installation .
  • Consider thermal expansion, support spacing, and future cable expansion .
  • Proper bend radius is critical for fiber optic and coaxial cables . Selecting the correct cable tray involves matching type, material, width, depth, length, and thickness to the specific application, ensuring compliance, safety, and long-term reliability.
