ADSS Fiber Optic Cable Operation Method

ADSS fiber optic cables are installed using controlled tension methods, primarily the stationary reel method, with careful attention to sag, span tension, and safety precautions.

Installation Methods

The stationary reel method is the standard approach for ADSS cable installation. In this method, the cable reel is positioned at one end of the span, and a take-up reel is placed at the other end. A pull line is threaded through travelers along the route, and the ADSS cable is attached to the pull line using a woven wire pulling eye. The cable is then pulled under controlled tension to prevent exceeding the minimum bending radius and to avoid damage to the fiber core . The moving reel method is generally not recommended because it can create uneven tension and stress on the cable .

Tension and Sag Management

Two types of tension are critical during ADSS operation:

  • Maximum pulling tension: The force applied while pulling the cable should not exceed the cable's specified limit, typically up to 600 lbF (2700 N) for aerial installations. Exceeding this can damage the cable .
  • Span tension: After installation, the cable is placed in pole hardware under calculated tension to achieve a target sag, usually around 1% of the span length. Span tension accounts for environmental loads such as wind and ice . Sag and tension calculations are essential to ensure the cable remains within safe mechanical limits and maintains proper clearance from power lines, especially for voltages above 69 kV .

Hardware and Support

ADSS cables use specialized hardware depending on span length and angle changes:

  • Tangent clamps: Used for short spans (<350 feet) with minimal angle changes (<15°) to allow the cable to slip under tension imbalance .
  • Armor Grip Suspension (AGS): Suitable for longer spans or moderate angle changes (<30°) to support the cable without damaging it .
  • Dead-ends: Installed at the ends of cable runs or at large angle changes (>30°) to secure the cable to structures .

Safety Precautions

ADSS installation requires strict adherence to safety standards:

  • Personnel must be trained in OSHA regulations and local power industry safety rules .
  • Use insulated tools, leather gloves, and safety harnesses when working aloft or near energized lines .
  • Avoid installation during extreme weather conditions such as high winds, rainstorms, or thick fog .
  • Inspect poles and equipment for hazards before climbing or operating machinery .

Operational Advantages

ADSS cables are all-dielectric, meaning they contain no metallic components, allowing safe installation near live power lines. They are lightweight, have low thermal expansion, and can withstand high tensile loads, making them suitable for long spans and high-voltage environments . Anti-track jackets allow operation in areas with strong electric fields, and proper installation ensures minimal maintenance and long-term reliability. In summary, the operation method of ADSS fiber optic cables involves careful planning, controlled tension installation using the stationary reel method, appropriate hardware selection, precise sag and span tension calculations, and strict adherence to safety protocols to ensure reliable performance on overhead power lines .
