Fiber Optic Sensor Bending

Fiber optic bending sensors detect curvature or strain in optical fibers, offering high sensitivity, compact size, and immunity to electromagnetic interference for applications in medical, industrial, and structural monitoring.

Overview

Fiber optic bending sensors measure the bending or curvature of optical fibers by detecting changes in light propagation caused by strain or deformation. These sensors are highly sensitive, compact, and immune to electromagnetic interference, making them suitable for environments where traditional electronic sensors may fail . They are often integrated with fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) or multicore fibers to enhance directional and 3D shape sensing capabilities .

Working Principle

The operation of fiber optic bending sensors relies on strain-induced changes in the optical properties of the fiber. In FBG-based sensors, bending causes a shift in the Bragg wavelength, which is proportional to the applied strain or curvature. The wavelength shift is influenced by the expansion or compression of the grating period and the effective refractive index of the fiber core . Vectorial sensors can measure bending in multiple directions by analyzing the relative power of reflected signals from multiple gratings or cores .

Types of Fiber Optic Bending Sensors

  • Single-core FBG sensors: Measure bending along a single axis, suitable for simple curvature detection .
  • Multicore fiber sensors: Enable 3D vector bending and distributed shape sensing by comparing strain across multiple cores .
  • Vectorial coupler-based sensors: Use femtosecond-laser-written gratings in coreless fibers to detect bending direction and magnitude with high sensitivity and cascadability .

Applications

  1. Medical Navigation and Robotics: Embedded in catheters, endoscopes, and robotic surgical arms, these sensors provide real-time feedback on tip position, curvature, and joint angles, improving precision in minimally invasive procedures .
  2. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM): Used in bridges, pipelines, wind turbine blades, and aircraft wings to monitor deformation, vibration, and load-induced curvature, enabling predictive maintenance .
  3. Industrial Process Control: Monitor bending of conveyor rollers, robotic arms, and pressure vessels to optimize operations and detect misalignment or wear before failure .
  4. Shape Sensing: Multiple sensors along flexible structures or smart textiles allow reconstruction of complex shapes, useful in space structures, composite manufacturing, and advanced endoscopes .

Advantages

  • High sensitivity and fast response to small deformations .
  • Compact and lightweight, suitable for integration in tight spaces .
  • Electromagnetic immunity, ideal for harsh industrial or medical environments .
  • Directional and 3D sensing capabilities with multicore or vectorial designs . Fiber optic bending sensors continue to evolve, with research focusing on distributed shape sensing, multi-directional detection, and improved fabrication techniques to expand their applications in robotics, healthcare, and structural monitoring .
