How to use the Thorlab optical power meter

Thorlabs optical power meters can be powered either via USB from a PC or through an internal battery pack, depending on the model.

Powering via USB (PM100USB and PM100Dx)

For USB-powered models like the PM100USB, the meter receives its operating power directly from a PC through a USB cable. To set it up:

1. Install the Software First: Before connecting the meter, install the Thorlabs Optical Parameter Monitor software on your PC to ensure proper recognition of the device and connected sensors .
2. Connect the USB Cable: Use a USB cable with a Type-A connector on the PC side and a Mini-B connector on the meter side .
3. Device Recognition: Upon first connection, the PC will detect the PM100USB as a new hardware device. Allow the system to install drivers; the rear-panel LED will light up to indicate power .
4. Sensor Connection: Attach a compatible C-Series photodiode, thermal, or pyroelectric sensor. The meter will automatically recognize the sensor and download calibration data .

Powering via Battery (PM100 Series)

For handheld models like the PM100, the meter can be powered using an internal NiMH battery pack:

1. Install the Battery Pack: Turn off the meter, insert the NiMH battery into its socket, and push it gently until it snaps into place .
2. Check Voltage Compatibility: Ensure the line voltage or battery voltage matches the specifications indicated on the meter to avoid damage .
3. Turn On the Meter: Use the power button to activate the console. The LCD display will illuminate, and the meter is ready for operation .

Additional Tips

• Hot-Swappable Sensors: Thorlabs sensors can be connected or disconnected while the meter is powered. Press slightly on both sides of the connector housing to attach or remove a sensor .
• Avoid Overvoltage: Do not apply voltage outside the specified range of the input connections to prevent damage .
