Wiring between power surge protection box and distribution box

SPDs should be wired in parallel with the power supply, as close as possible to the distribution panel, using short, direct connections with properly sized wires and a reliable grounding path.

Placement and Connection

For optimal protection, install the Surge Protection Device (SPD) near the main distribution panel or sub-panel where the power enters the system . The SPD should be connected in parallel with the power supply, not in series with the load, to safely divert excess voltage to ground . Avoid connecting directly to the main lugs; instead, use a dedicated circuit breaker or fused disconnect switch to facilitate servicing and ensure safety .

Wiring Guidelines

  • Use short, direct connections from the SPD terminals to the breaker or disconnect to minimize impedance and maximize surge protection .
  • Avoid sharp bends and excess wire length; neatness is secondary to electrical effectiveness .
  • Recommended wire size is AWG #10 stranded or larger for typical installations, with larger cross-sections (e.g., 16 mm²) for Type 1 SPDs handling higher surge currents .
  • Connect the live (L), neutral (N), and ground (PE) wires to the corresponding labeled terminals on the SPD .

Grounding

A reliable grounding system is critical. Connect the SPD's ground terminal to the local grounding plane using a copper wire with a cross-sectional area of at least 4 mm² . Ensure the grounding system complies with safety standards and maintains a low resistance (typically below 5 ohms) to safely conduct surge currents .

SPD Type Considerations

  • Type 1 SPD: Installed at the service entrance to protect against external surges like lightning.
  • Type 2 SPD: Installed at distribution boards or sub-panels for internal surge protection.
  • Type 3 SPD: Installed near sensitive devices for point-of-use protection . Maintain proper spacing between SPD types to prevent bypassing of upstream devices: at least 10 meters between Type 1 and Type 2, and 5 meters between Type 2 and Type 3 .

Safety and Maintenance

  • Only qualified electricians should install SPDs, following local codes and manufacturer instructions .
  • Switch off the main breaker and verify the circuit is de-energized before installation .
  • Regularly check SPD status indicators and grounding resistance to ensure continued protection .
  • Replace SPDs after 5–10 years or earlier if the device shows signs of failure . By following these wiring methods and installation practices, SPDs can effectively protect distribution boxes and downstream equipment from voltage surges, ensuring system reliability and safety.
