When a motor draws more current than its rated capacity, heat is generated, which can damage insulation, windings, or other components. The thermal relay senses this heat and interrupts the circuit to prevent permanent damage or fire hazards .

Working Principle

Thermal relays operate based on thermal expansion. The main component is a bimetallic strip, made of two metals with different expansion rates. As current increases, the strip heats up and bends due to the differing expansion rates. This bending triggers a mechanical tripping mechanism that opens the circuit, stopping current flow and allowing the device to cool down . Some relays also include a heating element to enhance sensitivity to overload conditions .
