Optical modules convert electrical signals into optical signals and vice versa, enabling high-speed data transmission over fiber optic networks.

Working Principle

Optical modules operate at the physical layer of the OSI model, serving as the bridge between electrical devices and optical fibers. The process involves two main functions:

  • Transmission (Tx): Electrical signals enter the module's transmitting interface and are processed by a driver circuit. The driver controls a light source, typically a laser diode (LD) or light-emitting diode (LED), which emits modulated optical signals corresponding to the input bit rate. These optical signals are then transmitted through the fiber optic cable .
  • Reception (Rx): Incoming optical signals are captured by a photodetector (PIN or APD photodiode) in the receiving interface. The photodetector converts light into electrical signals, which are then amplified by a preamplifier and output at the corresponding bit rate .

Internal Structure

The internal architecture of an optical module typically includes the following components:

  • Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA): Converts electrical signals into optical signals. It contains the light source (LD or LED), laser driver circuits, monitoring photodiodes, thermistors, and sometimes thermoelectric coolers (TEC) for temperature stabilization .
  • Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA): Converts optical signals back into electrical signals. It includes a photodetector, preamplifier, and sometimes a limiting amplifier for high-sensitivity applications .
  • Control and Driver Circuits: Manage the operation of the light source, monitor temperature, voltage, and current, and ensure stable signal conversion. High-speed modules may include modulators to encode data onto the light source .
  • Optical Components: Coupling lenses focus light into the fiber, isolators prevent back-reflection, and optical attenuators adjust signal strength to protect the receiver .
  • Mechanical and Packaging Elements: The housing protects internal components, while connectors and gold-finger pins ensure proper electrical and optical interfacing. SFP modules use a pin-length design to establish ground, power, and data connections in sequence, preventing electrical damage .

Light Sources

  • LEDs: Cost-effective, long lifespan, suitable for short-distance, low-speed applications. They emit incoherent light with low coupling efficiency .
  • Laser Diodes (LDs): Coherent light with narrow spectral linewidth, high directionality, and efficient fiber coupling. Types include VCSEL, FP, and DFB lasers, used for high-speed and long-distance transmission .
