Principle of Combined Fiber Optic Sensors

Fiber optic combined sensors operate by modulating light properties within a single fiber to simultaneously measure multiple physical quantities such as strain, temperature, and pressure.

Working Principle

Fiber optic combined sensors integrate intrinsic and extrinsic sensing mechanisms to detect multiple parameters using a single optical fiber. In intrinsic sensing, the fiber itself acts as the sensing element, where changes in strain, temperature, or pressure directly alter the light's intensity, phase, polarization, or wavelength as it propagates through the fiber. Extrinsic sensing involves an external transducer that modulates the light transmitted through the fiber, allowing the fiber to relay signals from remote or inaccessible locations (e.g., inside engines or electrical transformers) without being affected by electromagnetic interference .

Multi-Parameter Detection

Combined sensors often employ Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) or long-period gratings (LPGs), which reflect specific wavelengths of light depending on the physical conditions applied to the fiber. By embedding multiple gratings along a single fiber, each tuned to respond to a different measurand, the system can simultaneously monitor temperature, strain, pressure, or vibration. The reflected or transmitted light is analyzed to extract the individual contributions of each parameter . Interferometric techniques can also be used, where phase shifts in the light caused by mechanical deformation or pressure changes are measured to enhance sensitivity .

Advantages of Combined Fiber Optic Sensors

  • Distributed sensing: Multiple sensors can be multiplexed along a single fiber, enabling monitoring over long distances.
  • Electromagnetic immunity: Optical fibers are unaffected by high-voltage or RF environments, making them suitable for hazardous locations .
  • Miniaturization and multiplexing: Compact fiber structures allow integration of multiple sensing modalities without increasing system size.
  • High sensitivity and accuracy: Mechanical amplification structures, such as diaphragms or levers, can enhance the response of pressure or strain sensors embedded in the fiber .

Applications

Fiber optic combined sensors are widely used in structural health monitoring, aerospace, industrial automation, biomedical devices, and energy systems. For example, a single fiber can monitor both strain and temperature in a bridge or aircraft wing, providing real-time data for safety and maintenance decisions . In summary, the principle of fiber optic combined sensors relies on modulating light within the fiber in response to multiple physical quantities, using techniques like FBGs, interferometry, and hybrid intrinsic-extrinsic designs, enabling simultaneous, accurate, and distributed multi-parameter sensing.
