How to lay the A and B ends of the optical cable

The A and B ends of an optical cable are determined by the transmit (Tx) and receive (Rx) alignment, with A typically connecting to Rx and B to Tx, following TIA-568 standards.

Understanding A-B Polarity

In duplex fiber optic connections, two fibers carry bidirectional signals: one for transmitting (Tx) and one for receiving (Rx). To maintain proper communication, the Tx on one end must connect to the Rx on the other end. This is known as A-B polarity. When using standard A-B duplex patch cords, the A end corresponds to the receiver side, and the B end corresponds to the transmitter side. Facing an open port in the "key-up" position, B is on the left and A is on the right .

Identifying A and B Ends in Practice

  1. Duplex LC or SC Cables:
    • Use A-B duplex patch cords to ensure straight-through connections.
    • Color coding (e.g., blue for Tx, white for Rx) can help identify the ends.
    • Always connect Tx (B) to Rx (A), regardless of the number of patch panels or adapters in the channel .
  2. MPO/MTP Multi-Fiber Cables:
    • Polarity is managed using Type A, B, or C cables according to TIA-568 standards.
    • Type A (Straight-Through): Key-up on one end, key-down on the other; fiber 1 (Tx) connects to fiber 1 (Tx) at the far end.
    • Type B (Reversed): Key-up on both ends; fiber 1 (Tx) connects to fiber 12 (Rx), effectively flipping the fiber positions.
    • Type C (Pair-Flipped): Pairs of fibers are flipped inside the cable to maintain Tx/Rx alignment across high-density connections .

Best Practices

  • Follow TIA-568 standards for polarity to avoid misalignment.
  • Check key orientation on connectors (key-up vs key-down) to ensure correct mating.
  • Use color-coded or labeled patch cords to simplify identification of A and B ends.
  • Verify polarity with a fiber tester if unsure, especially in complex multi-segment or MPO trunk installations . By following these guidelines, you can reliably determine the A and B ends of optical cables and maintain proper Tx/Rx alignment, ensuring seamless data transmission in both duplex and multi-fiber networks.
