Construction of the Swedish Energy Internet Platform
Sweden is building a modern, digitally integrated energy platform through smart grid development, renewable integration, and advanced IT infrastructure led by Svenska kraftnät and supported by SweGRIDS and CGI.
National Grid Modernization
Sweden's national electricity grid is one of the oldest in the world, with many lines and stations nearing the end of their technical lifetime. To ensure a secure and reliable electricity supply, Svenska kraftnät is renewing existing infrastructure and constructing new lines and stations. This expansion supports renewable energy integration, particularly wind power, and enables Sweden to participate in a common European electricity market. The planning and construction of new lines typically take five to ten years, including consultation, concession, construction, and commissioning phases .
Smart Grids and Energy Storage
The SweGRIDS initiative, active from 2011 to 2022, was a major research and development program focused on smart grids and energy storage. It involved academia, industry, and public utilities, with funding from the Swedish Energy Agency and corporate partners. SweGRIDS aimed to develop devices and methods to handle higher proportions of renewable energy and facilitate energy trading. Over 100 scientists contributed to creating solutions that have been implemented by sponsor companies, enhancing the reliability and economic efficiency of Sweden's electricity system .
Digital Transformation and IT Integration
To further modernize the energy platform, Svenska kraftnät partnered with CGI under a multi-year framework agreement to deliver IT consulting services in architecture, leadership, and security. This collaboration focuses on reinforcing the digital foundation of Sweden's electricity transmission system, integrating data across stakeholders, and building a resilient, future-ready energy infrastructure. CGI's proprietary AgileDX™ platform is deployed for central data integration, enabling efficient, secure, and scalable management of energy data across European electricity markets .
