Temperature measured using fiber optic sensor

Fiber optic sensors measure temperature by detecting changes in light properties within optical fibers, offering high accuracy, EMI immunity, and suitability for harsh environments.

Working Principles

Fiber optic temperature sensors operate by monitoring changes in light properties as it travels through the fiber. Key mechanisms include:

  • Wavelength shift: Temperature changes cause a shift in the wavelength of light reflected or transmitted through the fiber, often using materials like GaAs, CdTe, or Si as the sensing element, where the energy bandgap shrinks with increasing temperature .
  • Intensity ratio of scattered light: In distributed temperature sensing (DTS), the ratio between Stokes and anti-Stokes light varies with temperature, enabling long-range monitoring up to 100 km .
  • Interferometric methods: Mach-Zehnder or Fabry-Pérot interferometers detect phase changes in light caused by temperature variations, providing high sensitivity and flexible geometry .

Types of Fiber Optic Temperature Sensors

  1. Point Sensors: Use a localized sensing element, such as a GaAs crystal at the fiber tip, for precise measurements in small areas or surfaces .
  2. Distributed Sensors: Utilize the entire fiber length to measure temperature along a line, suitable for monitoring pipelines, transformer windings, or downhole environments .
  3. Grating-Based Sensors: Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG), long-period gratings (LPG), and tilted FBGs reflect specific wavelengths that shift with temperature, enabling quasi-distributed sensing .

Advantages

  • Electromagnetic immunity: Fully dielectric design ensures no interference from EMI or RF fields .
  • High-temperature capability: Silica fibers operate up to ~1000 °C, microstructured fibers up to 1300 °C, and single-crystal fibers up to 1900 °C .
  • Compact and flexible: Small size allows embedding in tight or harsh environments.
  • Remote and distributed sensing: Enables monitoring over long distances without electrical connections.
  • Safety in hazardous environments: Passive sensing points require no electrical power, ideal for explosive or high-voltage areas .

Applications

  • Aerospace: Monitoring turbine and combustion chamber temperatures to extend engine life .
  • Power systems: Hot spot detection in transformers and high-voltage equipment .
  • Oil & Gas: Downhole temperature profiling in wells .
  • Industrial: High-voltage, magnetic field-intense, or chemically aggressive environments .
  • Medical and research: Compact sensors for precise temperature control in sensitive experiments .

Materials and Design Considerations

  • Sensing materials: GaAs is preferred for its strong wavelength-temperature response; CdTe and Si are also used .
  • Fiber types: Single-mode, multimode, plastic optical fibers, and microstructured fibers are selected based on temperature range, distance, and sensitivity requirements .
  • Installation: Proper calibration and integration with data acquisition systems are essential for accurate measurements . Fiber optic temperature sensors provide a robust, accurate, and versatile solution for temperature monitoring in environments where traditional electrical sensors may fail, making them increasingly important in aerospace, industrial, and energy applications .
