Optical module and optical patch cord

Selecting the right patch cord for an optical module is essential for network stability, performance, and signal quality.

Understanding Optical Modules and Patch Cords

An optical module is a transceiver that converts electrical signals into optical signals for fiber optic transmission. A fiber patch cord is a short fiber optic cable with connectors on both ends, used to connect optical modules to switches, patch panels, or other network devices . Correct matching ensures efficient data transmission, minimal signal loss, and reliable network performance .

Key Matching Parameters

1. Interface Type: Common patch cord interfaces include LC, SC, FC, ST, and MPO/MTP. LC is widely used for modern data centers, while MPO/MTP supports high-speed parallel transmission for 40G, 100G, or higher networks . 2. Endface Type:

  • PC (Physical Contact): Standard micro-spherical polish, suitable for most applications.
  • UPC (Ultra Physical Contact): Optimized PC with lower insertion loss.
  • APC (Angled Physical Contact): 8-degree polish to reduce reflections, ideal for long-distance or high-speed links . 3. Fiber Type:
  • Single-mode (OS2): Best for long-distance transmission (10 km–80 km+).
  • Multimode (OM1/OM2/OM3/OM4/OM5): Suitable for short to medium distances within data centers, with OM3/OM4/OM5 supporting higher bandwidth . 4. MPO/MTP Cores and Polarity: High-speed modules like 40G QSFP+ or 100G QSFP28 often use 8-core or 12-core MPO/MTP patch cords. Polarity types (Type A, B, C) must match the network design to ensure proper signal routing .

Practical Examples

  • 1.25G SFP SX module: 850 nm wavelength, LC duplex interface, pairs with multimode OM1/OM2 patch cords for distances up to 550 m.
  • 1.25G SFP LX module: 1310 nm wavelength, LC duplex interface, pairs with single-mode OS2 patch cords for distances up to 10 km.
  • 10G SFP+ SR module: 850 nm, LC duplex, multimode OM3 patch cord, up to 300 m.
  • 10G SFP+ LR module: 1310 nm, LC duplex, single-mode OS2 patch cord, up to 10 km .

Best Practices

  • Match fiber type to module wavelength: 850 nm for multimode, 1310 nm for single-mode.
  • Use high-quality, low-loss patch cords to maintain signal integrity and reduce bit error rates.
  • Consider future scalability: OM4 or OM5 multimode fibers are recommended for higher-speed upgrades.
  • Avoid mixing single-mode and multimode fibers, as this can render the network unusable . By carefully selecting the interface, fiber type, endface polish, and polarity, you ensure optimal performance and reliability for your optical network.
