Structure and Materials

Silicon core tubes are typically three-layer co-extruded composite pipes:

  1. Outer layer (HDPE shell): Provides structural strength, impact resistance, corrosion resistance, UV protection, and weather durability .
  2. Middle layer: Enhances mechanical strength and overall structural integrity .
  3. Inner layer (silicon core): A solid silicone or siliceous lubricant layer co-extruded with HDPE, offering an ultra-low friction coefficient for smooth cable installation . The inner silicone layer is made from a mixture of high-density polyethylene, silicone, active silicone oil, dimethyl silicone oil, initiating agents, and antioxidants, ensuring heat resistance, durability, and repeated cable extraction without peeling or detachment .

Performance Characteristics

  • Low friction: Friction coefficient can be as low as 0.06–0.142, allowing optical cables to be pulled or blown through the tube with minimal effort .
  • Durability: Resistant to wear, heat, and environmental factors; the inner silicone layer does not react with water and can be flushed if needed .
  • Mechanical strength: HDPE outer shell provides high pressure resistance, ring rigidity, and flexibility for bends and drops during installation .
  • Long service life: Can last up to 100 years under proper conditions .
