Optical Module TOSA Structure

The TOSA (Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly) converts electrical signals into optical signals using a laser diode, photodiode, and supporting circuits packaged in a compact assembly.

Core Components of TOSA

  1. Laser Diode (LD) The laser diode is the core light-emitting device in TOSA, responsible for generating coherent optical signals. Common types include VCSEL, FP, DFB, and EML lasers, each suited for different transmission distances and speeds. FP lasers are used for short-distance, low-speed applications, DFB lasers provide single-wavelength output for long-distance single-mode transmission, and VCSELs are optimized for short-range multimode links .
  2. Monitoring Photodiode A photodiode monitors the output power of the laser to ensure stable operation. It provides feedback to the Automatic Power Control (APC) circuit, maintaining consistent optical output .
  3. Laser Driver Circuit The driver circuit supplies the laser diode with a DC bias current slightly above the threshold current and modulates it with high-speed electrical signals. This ensures rapid and accurate conversion of electrical data into optical pulses .
  4. Thermistor and Thermoelectric Cooler (TEC) These components regulate the temperature of the laser diode. The Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) circuit works with the TEC to maintain wavelength stability and prevent performance degradation due to temperature fluctuations .
  5. Optical Isolator The isolator prevents reflected light from returning to the laser diode, which could destabilize the output and affect signal quality .
  6. Optical Alignment and Adapter The TOSA includes a die sleeve and adjustment mechanisms to align the laser output precisely with the optical fiber. Adapters such as SC, LC, FC, or ST types facilitate connection to the fiber network .

Packaging

TOSA components are typically packaged in TO-coaxial (TO-CAN) or butterfly packages, which provide mechanical stability, thermal management, and optical alignment. The compact packaging ensures reliable performance in high-speed optical modules such as 1.25G SFP, 10G SFP+, 25G SFP28, 40G QSFP+, and 100G QSFP28 .

Function in Optical Modules

TOSA serves as the transmitting core of an optical module. It converts high-speed electrical signals from the module's driver circuitry into optical signals, which are then coupled into the optical fiber for transmission. Depending on the design, TOSA can be cooled or uncooled, and may use direct modulation (DML) or electro-absorption modulation (EML) for signal encoding .
