Step 2: Measure Open-Circuit Voltage (Voc)

  1. Set your multimeter to DC voltage mode.
  2. Connect the red probe to the positive terminal and the black probe to the negative terminal of the panel .
  3. Ensure no load is connected to the panel.
  4. Compare the reading to the panel's rated Voc (usually on the back label). A reading of 90–100% of rated Voc indicates normal operation. Values below 80% may indicate a damaged panel or failed bypass diode .

Step 3: Measure Short-Circuit Current (Isc)

  • Short-circuit current is the maximum current a panel can produce. Most standard multimeters cannot safely measure high DC currents directly.
  • Use a clamp meter or specialized equipment for Isc measurement, or consult a qualified technician .
  • Never intentionally short-circuit a panel without proper equipment, as this can be dangerous.

Step 4: Test Continuity and Wiring

  • Set the multimeter to continuity mode.
  • Check series connections, junction boxes, and wiring for breaks or high resistance.
  • A continuous beep indicates a complete circuit; no beep may indicate a broken wire or faulty connection .

Step 5: Interpret Results

  • Normal Voc and continuity: Panel and wiring are likely fine; check downstream components (inverter, controller) if system underperforms .
  • Low Voc or Isc: Indicates panel degradation, shading, or bypass diode failure .
  • Open circuit in wiring: Requires repair or replacement of connectors or cables .

Step 6: Regular Monitoring

  • Test panels annually, ideally after cleaning, to catch issues early .
