Main Parameters of Fiber Optic Sensors

Fiber optic sensors are characterized by parameters such as sensitivity, accuracy, resolution, dynamic range, response time, and environmental robustness, which define their performance in measuring physical, chemical, or biological quantities.

Key Parameters

1. Sensitivity Sensitivity refers to the sensor's ability to detect small changes in the measured quantity. For example, in strain or temperature sensing, a highly sensitive fiber optic sensor can detect minute variations in strain or temperature by observing changes in light intensity, wavelength, phase, or polarization within the fiber . 2. Accuracy and Precision Accuracy indicates how close the sensor's measurement is to the true value, while precision reflects the repeatability of measurements. Fiber optic sensors, especially those using fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), can achieve high accuracy and precision in detecting strain, temperature, or pressure . 3. Resolution Resolution is the smallest detectable change in the measured parameter. High-resolution sensors can detect very fine variations, which is critical in structural health monitoring or biomedical applications . 4. Dynamic Range Dynamic range defines the span of measurable values, from the minimum to the maximum. For instance, a temperature sensor may have a dynamic range from -200°C to 600°C, depending on the fiber type and sensing mechanism . 5. Response Time Response time is the time required for the sensor to react to a change in the measured quantity. Fast response times are essential in applications like vibration monitoring or real-time industrial process control . 6. Environmental Robustness Fiber optic sensors are valued for their immunity to electromagnetic interference (EMI), resistance to high voltage, and ability to operate in harsh environments, including high temperatures, corrosive media, or explosive atmospheres . 7. Measurement Type and Modulation Sensors can measure various physical quantities such as strain, temperature, pressure, displacement, or chemical concentrations. The measurement is achieved by modulating light properties—intensity, wavelength, phase, polarization, or transit time—within the fiber . 8. Spatial Resolution and Distributed Sensing Some fiber optic sensors, particularly intrinsic types, allow distributed sensing along the fiber length, enabling measurements over large distances (up to hundreds of kilometers) with spatial resolution defined by the interrogation method . 9. Multiplexing Capability Fiber optic sensors can support multiple sensing points along a single fiber using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) or time-domain techniques, which is important for structural monitoring or industrial networks . 10. Calibration and Stability Long-term stability and ease of calibration are critical parameters, especially in industrial and aerospace applications. Fiber optic sensors often require minimal recalibration due to their inherent stability and resistance to environmental drift . In summary, the performance of fiber optic sensors is defined by a combination of sensitivity, accuracy, resolution, dynamic range, response time, environmental robustness, measurement type, spatial resolution, multiplexing capability, and stability, making them versatile tools for precise and reliable monitoring across diverse applications .
