Overview of Single-Mode Fiber

Single-mode optical fiber is designed to carry only one transverse mode of light, allowing signals to travel in a straight path with minimal dispersion. Its core diameter is typically 8–9 micrometers, surrounded by cladding of about 125 micrometers, which ensures total internal reflection and low signal loss over long distances . Single-mode fibers are ideal for high-bandwidth applications and long-haul communication, often operating at wavelengths of 1310 nm or 1550 nm .

Single-Fiber (BiDi) Modules

Single-fiber modules, also called bidirectional (BiDi) transceivers, use one fiber for both transmitting (TX) and receiving (RX). This is achieved by assigning two different wavelengths: one for transmitting and another for receiving. For example, one module may transmit at 1310 nm and receive at 1550 nm, while the paired module does the opposite . This approach reduces fiber usage by 50%, saving space and cost, especially in dense network deployments.

How Communication Works

  1. Signal Conversion: The optical module converts electrical signals from network devices into optical signals for transmission over the fiber.
