Fiber optic cable wrapping and tying

Fiber optic cables are bound and wrapped using yarns, tapes, or attachment systems to ensure mechanical stability, prevent twisting, and protect fibers during installation and operation.

Yarn Binding in Cable Manufacturing

In the manufacturing of optical cables, yarn binding is a critical step to maintain cable integrity and compactness. Modern methods often use double-end binding yarns that wrap the cable core in both forward and reverse directions. This approach reduces the running speed of the binding equipment, stabilizes yarn tension, minimizes yarn breakage, and improves overall production efficiency compared to traditional single-end wrapping methods . The binding pitch, typically 20–30 mm depending on cable design, directly affects the mechanical performance and stability of the cable . High-quality binder yarns with low and constant tension are essential for optimal results, and specialized machinery is used to apply them at high speed .

Bundling and Routing in Field Installation

During field installation, fiber optic binding tapes are commonly used to bundle fibers within cabinets or trays. These tapes are usually 12.5 mm wide, with a hook side and a mat side. The mat side contacts the fibers to avoid damage, while the hook side secures the bundle. Proper bundling requires arranging fibers neatly, applying moderate force, and limiting the number of fibers per bundle (e.g., up to 100 fibers of 2 mm diameter or 60 fibers of 3 mm diameter), . Bundling prevents tangling, reduces stress on individual fibers, and facilitates organized routing in trays or conduits.

Cable Wrapping for Attached Cables

For overhead or attached fiber optic cables, wrapping methods are used to secure the cable to a host conductor, such as a power line. The cable is wound around the host using specialized equipment, sometimes powered or radio-controlled for high-voltage lines. This method, exemplified by systems like SkyWrap, ensures the cable remains attached while minimizing mechanical stress. Wrapped cables can be applied to earth wires, phase conductors, or shield wires, and the wrapping process must account for tension, spacing, and environmental conditions . Wrapping was the first widely adopted method for attached cables and remains common due to its reliability and ease of installation.

Best Practices

  • Avoid sharp bends, excessive pulling, or twisting during installation to prevent fiber damage .
  • Use figure-8 loops when storing or pulling cable to prevent twisting and maintain mechanical integrity .
  • Ensure protective materials remain in place until installation to prevent environmental or mechanical damage .
  • Maintain proper tension and alignment during yarn binding or wrapping to avoid equipment damage and fiber breakage . By combining industrial yarn binding with field bundling and wrapping techniques, fiber optic cables achieve both mechanical stability and organized routing, ensuring long-term performance and reliability.
