A distribution box, also called a distribution board or DB, receives the main power supply and distributes it to multiple circuits through protective devices like MCBs, RCCBs, or fuses . In a chain connection, the main input (phase and neutral) is connected to the main MCB or main switch. From there, power is sequentially routed to downstream protective devices and branch circuits .

Typical Wiring Steps

1. Main Input Connection: Connect the incoming phase and neutral wires to the input terminals of the main MCB. This MCB acts as the primary switch for the entire distribution box .
2. RCCB/Residual Current Device: If used, connect the output of the main MCB to the input of the RCCB. The RCCB provides protection against leakage currents and electrical shocks .
3. Branch Circuit Connections:
   • For single-pole MCBs, connect the phase wire from the RCCB output to the MCB input. The neutral wire is connected to the neutral bus bar.
   • For double-pole MCBs, connect both phase and neutral from the RCCB output to the MCB input if the load requires it .
4. Load Wiring: Connect the output terminals of each MCB to the respective load. Ensure the earth wire from the load is connected to the earth bus bar .
5. Neutral and Earth Links: All neutral wires from branch circuits are connected to the neutral bar, and all earth wires are connected to the earth bar. The metallic body of the distribution box should also be earthed .

Safety and Best Practices

• Follow the principle: phase to phase terminal, neutral to neutral terminal, earth to earth terminal .
• Use appropriately rated MCBs and RCCBs according to the load requirements .
• Arrange wires neatly, secure with zip ties, and leave space for heat dissipation .
• Perform insulation resistance tests and circuit on/off checks before powering the system .
• Install the distribution box in a dry, ventilated, and accessible location, using waterproof enclosures if necessary .
