Huawei switch ports can be converted to optical ports by using certified SFP/QSFP modules, enabling optical mode on combo interfaces, and configuring interface breakout if needed.

Using Combo Interfaces

Many Huawei switches feature Combo interfaces, which support both electrical and optical connections but only one mode can be active at a time. To switch a combo port to optical mode:

  1. Enter system view on the switch.
  2. Access the interface configuration mode for the desired port.
  3. Execute the command combo enable fiber to activate the optical interface. To revert to electrical mode, use undo combo enable fiber.
  4. Ensure the same configuration is applied on the peer device.
  5. Insert a compatible GE SFP optical module into the port; the module will now operate normally .

Ensuring Optical Module Compatibility

  • Use Huawei-certified optical modules to ensure transmission reliability and service stability. Non-certified modules may cause connectivity issues .
  • Match the fiber type (single-mode or multimode) with the optical module.
  • Ensure the module's data rate matches the interface (e.g., do not use a 10G module on a 1G port).
  • Check the module's wavelength, received, and transmitted optical power using commands like display transceiver interface xgigabitethernet 0/0/2 verbose .

Configuring Interface Breakout (Optional)

For high-speed QSFP ports (e.g., 40G), you can split the interface into multiple lower-speed optical interfaces:

  1. Enter system view.
  2. Execute the command: port split dimension interface 40GE 2/0/1 split-type 4*10GE This converts a single 40G port into four independent 10G optical interfaces.
  3. Save the configuration and restart the switch for changes to take effect.
  4. Connect the breakout interfaces using 1-to-4 fiber cables, optical modules with fiber adapters, or QSA adapters .

Additional Tips

  • Perform a loopback test to verify optical module functionality before connecting to the network.
  • Check the port status with display interface to ensure it is not administratively down.
  • Always wear an anti-static wrist strap when handling optical modules to prevent ESD damage . By following these steps, you can successfully convert Huawei switch ports to optical ports, ensuring proper module compatibility, interface configuration, and network connectivity.
