Fiber optic splicing is essential for extending cable lengths, repairing broken fibers, or connecting different types of fiber cables. The goal is to align the microscopic glass cores precisely to ensure low attenuation (0.1–0.5 dB) and minimal back reflection (-50 to -70 dB) for efficient light transmission . Splicing differs from connectors, which are temporary, as it forms a permanent or semi-permanent bond .

Types of Splicing

  1. Fusion Splicing: This method uses an electric arc to melt and fuse the ends of two fibers, creating a seamless joint with extremely low signal loss (around 0.1 dB) and minimal reflection. It is ideal for long-haul and high-performance applications .
  2. Mechanical Splicing: This method aligns the fiber ends in a mechanical holder with an index-matching gel to reduce light loss. It is faster and requires less equipment but typically results in slightly higher signal loss (around 0.3–0.5 dB) and back reflection. Mechanical splicing is often used for temporary connections or quick repairs .

Basic Steps in Fiber Optic Splicing

  1. Preparation: Strip the fiber cables to remove jackets, buffers, and protective layers, exposing the bare fibers. Clean the fibers thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol to remove dust, oil, or residue .
  2. Cleaving: Use a fiber cleaver to make a precise, perpendicular cut on each fiber end. A clean cleave is critical to minimize splice loss .
  3. Alignment:
    • For fusion splicing, place the fiber ends into a fusion splicer, which automatically aligns them using core or cladding alignment technology.
    • For mechanical splicing, manually align the fiber ends in a mechanical splice holder with index-matching gel to ensure proper light transmission .
  4. Bonding/Splicing:
    • In fusion splicing, the machine generates an electric arc to fuse the fibers into a single continuous strand.
    • In mechanical splicing, the fibers are held in place by the mechanical fixture, and the gel fills any air gaps to reduce reflection .
  5. Protection: Cover the splice with heat-shrink tubing or a splice protector to safeguard the joint. Place the protected splice inside a splice tray or enclosure for additional stability .
  6. Testing: Use a Visual Fault Locator (VFL) or Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) to verify alignment, light transmission, and detect any signal loss or defects .
