How to lay optical cables in an optical distribution box

Properly laying optical cables in a distribution box involves careful mounting, cable introduction, routing, and secure connections to prevent damage and maintain signal quality.

Step 1: Install the Distribution Box

First, determine the installation location and orientation of the optical distribution box according to your network layout. Mount the box on a rack, wall, or pole using the provided brackets and screws. Ensure the box is securely fixed and accessible for future maintenance or expansion .

Step 2: Introduce Optical Cables

Introduce the optical cable into the distribution box through the designated cable inlet. Use a suitable grommet or cable gland to secure the cable and prevent movement. Typically, pre-terminated branch fiber jumpers or pigtails are used. Ensure the cable is not bent sharply or pulled tightly, as optical fibers are fragile and can be damaged by excessive tension .

Step 3: Route the Fiber Cables

Inside the box, leave enough slack in the main cable trunk to allow the front panel to be fully extended without stressing the fibers. Use cable ties or movable clips to secure the trunk at key points, but avoid tying individual branch fibers. Route each branch fiber carefully to the adapter panel, maintaining the minimum bend radius to prevent signal loss or fiber breakage .

Step 6: Test and Document

After installation, perform visual inspection and continuity testing using a light source or power meter to verify signal integrity. Label all ports and connections clearly, and update network documentation to reflect the configuration for future reference . By following these steps, you ensure that optical fibers are securely installed, protected from damage, and organized for efficient network operation.
