Optical Port Power

Typical optical transceivers, such as SFP+ modules, have a minimum and maximum transmit power specification, and the receiver has a sensitivity range to ensure proper data reception. The difference between transmit power and receiver sensitivity defines the link budget, which determines the maximum distance a signal can travel without degradation. Optical power levels are logarithmic, so doubling or halving the signal corresponds to a 3 dB increase or decrease in optical strength . High-speed modules like QSFP28 or OSFP may require higher power, and switches are rated by power class according to Multi-Source Agreements (MSA) to ensure compatibility .

Electrical Port Power

Electrical ports, typically using RJ45 interfaces, provide electrical power to connected devices and modules. Standard electrical port modules, such as SFP electrical-to-RJ45 converters, support speeds up to 10G and are designed for short-reach connections (usually under 100 meters) using UTP cables . The switch supplies sufficient electrical power for these modules to operate, but higher-speed modules (10G) consume more power and generate heat, which must be considered in switch deployment . Electrical ports do not transmit optical signals; instead, they rely on copper cabling and the switch's internal PHY chips for data transmission.
