The structure must be firm, with sturdy guide rails and welded mounting lugs for non-floor-standing boxes (40×4 mm, 10 cm length) to ensure secure installation .

While exact dimensions vary depending on capacity and manufacturer, typical enclosure sizes for low-voltage distribution boxes range from 65×65 mm up to 361×254 mm, with multiple cover heights available . For larger distribution boxes (e.g., 63–315 kVA), busbar and dropper dimensions are standardized, such as 72×50×8 mm for 63/100 kVA and 112×50×15 mm for 160/315 kVA boxes . The roof is often slightly slanted with a 50 mm overhang to prevent water ingress .
Mounting Heights and Installation
- Fixed distribution boxes: bottom of the enclosure should be 1.3–1.5 m above ground.
- Mobile distribution boxes: bottom should be 0.6–1.5 m above ground .
- Distance between a distribution box and a switch box should not exceed 30 m, and horizontal distance to fixed electrical equipment should not exceed 3 m .
Mechanical and Safety Features
- Doors should have concealed hinges and Godrej-type 3-position locking systems for security .
- Boxes must provide adequate clearance for busbars and components, conforming to applicable electrical rules.
- Earthing points: at least two solid points on either side of the box.
- Protection rating: IP-55 for outdoor enclosures, verified via type testing .
