Fiber optic fusion splice and fiber optic coupler

Fusion splicing is the professional standard for permanently joining optical fibers, while couplers provide a simpler, reversible method for connecting pre-terminated fibers.

Fusion Splicing

Fusion splicing involves permanently joining two optical fibers by fusing their ends using an electric arc, creating a low-loss, high-strength connection with typical losses of 0.02–0.05 dB . The process requires precise fiber cleaving to ensure smooth, perpendicular fiber ends, and core alignment, which can be achieved using optical core alignment (profile alignment) or LID (Local Injection and Detection) techniques . Modern fusion splicers often include automated alignment, arc calibration, and loss estimation, and they may also heat-shrink protective sleeves over the splice to safeguard against environmental damage . Fusion splicing is ideal for permanent installations, such as FTTH networks, long-distance links, and patch bays, where minimizing signal loss is critical . Ribbon splicing allows multiple fibers to be fused simultaneously, improving efficiency in high-density applications .

Couplers

A coupler (or adapter) is a mechanical device used to join two pre-terminated fiber cables without fusion. It aligns the connector ferrules using a zirconia sleeve, providing a simple and reversible connection with typical losses of 0.2–0.5 dB . Couplers are useful for temporary connections, network testing, or extending fiber runs without specialized splicing equipment. Hybrid couplers can connect different connector types, such as SC/APC to LC/UPC, but care must be taken not to mix APC and UPC on the same connector type .

Mechanical Splices

Mechanical splices are another alternative, where bare fibers are aligned inside a plastic housing filled with index-matching gel. They offer moderate performance (0.1–0.5 dB loss) and are easier to install than fusion splices but are less durable and reliable for long-term use .

Summary of Methods

MethodTypical LossPermanenceUse Case
Fusion Splice0.02–0.05 dBPermanentLong-distance, FTTH, high-performance networks
Coupler0.2–0.5 dBReversibleTemporary connections, testing, cable extension
Mechanical Splice0.1–0.5 dBSemi-permanentQuick repairs, moderate-performance links

In practice, fusion splicing is preferred for critical, permanent fiber connections, while couplers provide flexibility for non-permanent or mixed-connector scenarios. Proper equipment, alignment, and handling are essential to achieve low-loss, reliable fiber joints .
