Comparison Test of Fiber Optic Sensors

Fiber optic sensors (FOS) can be compared based on type, sensing principle, accuracy, and application, with Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG) and Fabry–Perot Interferometers (FPI) being the most widely used.

Types of Fiber Optic Sensors

Intrinsic Sensors: The fiber itself acts as the sensing element, detecting changes in light properties such as intensity, phase, wavelength, or refractive index. Common intrinsic architectures include Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG), Raman and Brillouin scattering sensors, and interferometers like Mach–Zehnder, Sagnac, and Michelson. These sensors are highly sensitive, immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI), and suitable for harsh environments, including structural health monitoring and vibration detection . Extrinsic Sensors: The fiber serves only as a light guide, with the sensing occurring outside the fiber. Typical examples include Fabry–Perot interferometers (FPI). These sensors offer flexibility in measurement point design and are often used in industrial process monitoring . Hybrid Sensors: Combine intrinsic and extrinsic elements, allowing light to interact both inside and outside the fiber for specialized applications .

Comparative Features

FeatureFiber Bragg Grating (FBG)Fabry–Perot Interferometer (FPI)
Sensing PrincipleWavelength shift due to strain or temperatureInterference pattern changes due to cavity length variations
SensitivityHigh for strain and temperatureHigh, especially for small displacements or pressure
EMI ImmunityExcellentExcellent
Temperature RangeUp to ~450°CTypically lower than FBG, depends on cavity material
ApplicationsStructural health, aerospace, biomedicalIndustrial process control, pressure, vibration
Fabrication ComplexityModerateHigher, requires precise cavity alignment
CostModerateHigher initial cost, but suitable for precision applications

Advantages of Fiber Optic Sensors

  • High sensitivity and accuracy for strain, temperature, and pressure measurements .
  • EMI immunity allows use in high-voltage, RF, or microwave environments .
  • Remote and distributed sensing capabilities enable monitoring over long distances .
  • Durability in harsh environments, including chemical exposure and extreme temperatures .

Limitations

  • Higher initial cost compared to conventional sensors like thermocouples or RTDs .
  • Limited supplier availability and specialized fabrication requirements .
  • Bend radius constraints can affect installation flexibility .
  • Temperature range limitations for some fiber types compared to metallic sensors .

Applications

Fiber optic sensors are widely used in:

  • Structural Health Monitoring: Bridges, buildings, and aerospace structures .
  • Industrial Process Control: High-temperature or hazardous environments .
  • Biomedical Monitoring: Non-invasive sensing and remote diagnostics .
  • Environmental Sensing: Chemical detection and distributed temperature monitoring .

Conclusion

The choice between FBG and FPI sensors depends on the application requirements: FBGs are preferred for distributed strain and temperature monitoring due to their robustness and ease of multiplexing, while FPIs excel in high-precision measurements of pressure or displacement. Overall, fiber optic sensors offer superior accuracy, EMI immunity, and long-term reliability, making them ideal for critical and harsh environment applications, despite higher initial costs .
