GPON is based on what kind of passive optical network

GPON is a high-speed fiber-optic broadband network that uses a point-to-multipoint architecture with passive optical splitters to deliver data, voice, and video services efficiently to multiple end users.

Overview

GPON, or Gigabit Passive Optical Network, is a type of Passive Optical Network (PON) standardized by ITU-T under the G.984 series . It is widely used for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), fiber-to-the-building (FTTB), and other FTTx deployments, providing high-speed broadband connectivity over a single optical fiber shared among multiple users . Unlike traditional point-to-point fiber networks, GPON does not require powered equipment between the service provider and the end users, which reduces infrastructure costs, simplifies maintenance, and increases reliability .

Architecture and Components

  1. Optical Line Terminal (OLT): Located at the service provider's central office, the OLT manages upstream and downstream traffic, converting electrical signals to optical signals and vice versa .
  2. Passive Optical Splitters: These devices divide the optical signal from the OLT to serve multiple premises, typically supporting ratios from 1:16 up to 1:64. They require no power, making the network passive in the distribution segment .
  3. Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) / Optical Network Units (ONUs): Installed at the customer premises, these devices convert optical signals back into electrical signals for end-user devices. ONTs are usually customer-facing, while ONUs can serve multiple users in some configurations .
  4. Optical Distribution Network (ODN): The fiber infrastructure connecting the OLT to the splitters and ONTs/ONUs, composed entirely of passive optical components .

Operation

GPON uses a point-to-multipoint topology, where a single fiber from the OLT is split to serve multiple users. Downstream data is broadcast to all connected ONTs, while upstream data is coordinated using Time-Division Multiple Access (TDMA) to prevent collisions . GPON supports asymmetric bandwidth, typically up to 2.4 Gbps downstream and 1.2 Gbps upstream, with newer variants offering higher speeds . Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) allows multiple signals to travel over the same fiber using different wavelengths .

Advantages

  • High-speed broadband for multiple services (Internet, IPTV, VoIP) .
  • Cost-efficient due to passive splitters and shared fiber infrastructure .
  • Scalable and reliable, supporting up to 128 ONTs per OLT in standard deployments .
  • Long reach, typically up to 20 km without signal degradation . GPON remains a dominant technology for next-generation broadband networks due to its combination of speed, efficiency, and scalability, making it ideal for residential, business, and smart-city applications .
