Denmark Convergence Switch OSFP

OSFP (Octal Small Form Factor Pluggable) modules enable high-speed, high-density switch connectivity with support for up to 1.6Tbps per port, making them ideal for modern data centers and AI-driven networks.

Overview of OSFP

The OSFP connector system is a pluggable form factor designed for high-speed data center switches and routers. It supports 8 or 16 high-speed electrical lanes, enabling aggregate data rates from 400 Gbps (8x50G) up to 1.6 Tbps (8x200G) for standard OSFP modules, and up to 3.2 Tbps for OSFP-XD extended density modules with 16 lanes . OSFP modules are slightly larger than QSFP-DD connectors but provide enhanced thermal performance and signal integrity, which is critical for high-power, high-speed applications .

Key Features

  • High Data Rates: Supports 56G, 112G, and 224G PAM-4 signaling, allowing flexible deployment for 400G, 800G, and 1.6Tbps links .
  • Thermal Management: Standard OSFP modules include an integrated heatsink, while OSFP-RHS variants allow external cooling solutions for higher versatility .
  • Port Density: Up to 36 OSFP ports per 1U switch front panel, with OSFP-XD doubling the faceplate density for 16-lane modules .
  • Cable Compatibility: Works with direct-attach cables (DACs), active optical cables (AOCs), and pluggable transceivers, providing flexibility in data center interconnects .
  • Applications: Ideal for hyperscale data centers, AI/ML clusters, high-performance computing, and 800G ZR/ZR+ coherent optics deployments .

OSFP vs QSFP-DD

While both OSFP and QSFP-DD support high-speed networking, OSFP offers better thermal performance and higher power handling, making it suitable for ultra high-speed applications. QSFP-DD modules are mechanically compliant with QSFP-DD MSA, whereas OSFP modules follow the OSFP MSA standard . OSFP-XD modules are not cross-compatible with standard OSFP ports due to mechanical and electrical differences .

Use in 800G Networking

OSFP modules are widely used in 800G ZR/ZR+ coherent optics, enabling long-distance DWDM links up to 120 km for 800ZR and beyond 1000 km for 800G ZR+. These modules leverage coherent technology and CMOS innovations to transmit high-speed traffic directly from switches or routers, supporting both metro and regional data center interconnects .

Summary

For Denmark or any high-performance network deployment, OSFP switches provide a scalable, high-density solution capable of handling AI-driven workloads, hyperscale data center traffic, and long-distance optical interconnects. The combination of high data rates, thermal efficiency, and flexible cabling options makes OSFP a leading choice for modern convergence switches.
