How to weld fiber distribution boxes

Use fusion splicing with a modern automatic splicer, proper fiber preparation, and organized distribution box layout to achieve fast and reliable fiber connections.

Step 1: Prepare the Fiber Cables

Before welding, strip the fiber coating carefully using a precision stripper to expose the bare fiber (125 µm diameter) without damaging it. Clean the fiber with isopropyl alcohol and lint-free wipes to remove any gel or debris, especially for cables with anti-moisture gel. For reinforced cables, trim aramid fibers using Kevlar scissors to prevent interference during splicing .

Step 2: Select and Prepare the Distribution Box

Choose a distribution box suitable for the installation environment (wall-mounted, underground, or 19" rack). Proper selection protects fibers from mechanical damage and moisture, reducing future maintenance. Organize the box with fiber trays to maintain proper bend radius and prevent signal loss .

Step 3: Cut and Align Fibers

Use a high-precision fiber cutter to cut fibers to the correct length (typically 10–15 mm for fusion splicing). Place the fibers into the V-groove of the fusion splicer, ensuring proper alignment. Modern automatic splicers handle centering and arc parameters automatically, significantly reducing welding time .

Step 4: Perform Fusion Splicing

Close the splicer cover and start the welding process. The splicer creates an electric arc that fuses the fiber ends together. After splicing, slide a heat-shrinkable sleeve over the joint and cure it in a heat oven (20 mm sleeve ~40 seconds, 60 mm sleeve ~85 seconds) to protect the splice .

Step 5: Coil and Organize Fibers

Place the spliced fibers into the fiber storage tray inside the distribution box. Maintain a proper bend radius to minimize signal loss. Ensure the box is sealed and moisture-proof, especially for outdoor or suburban installations, to prevent water ingress that can degrade fiber performance .

  • Use a modern automatic fusion splicer to reduce manual alignment and welding time .
  • Pre-cut and clean multiple fibers before starting splicing to streamline workflow.
  • Organize the distribution box layout in advance to minimize handling during installation.
  • Use heat-shrinkable sleeves of appropriate size to speed up protection of splices.
  • Avoid unnecessary fiber tension or sharp bends to prevent rework. By following these steps and using modern splicing equipment, you can quickly and reliably weld fiber distribution boxes while maintaining high-quality optical connections .
