Start by cutting the fiber cleanly, then polish with progressively finer sandpaper (200–600 grit) to achieve a smooth surface .
  2. Heat-Shrink Tubing: Slip a heat-shrink tube over the sensor or LED, insert the fiber, and apply heat to secure it. This method is simple and effective for small-diameter fibers (e.g., 2.2 mm), though it may not be ideal for long-term outdoor use. Adhesive can be added for a more permanent connection .
  3. Cementing: For stronger, permanent connections, fibers can be cemented into a hole in the sensor's epoxy capsule. Remove the fiber jacket if necessary, apply optical cement, and optionally cover the junction with heat-shrink tubing for protection .
  4. Fusion Splicing: For sensor arrays or networks, fusion splicing provides a permanent, low-loss connection between fibers. This is especially useful when connecting multiple sensors in series to an interrogator channel, ensuring minimal signal loss and avoiding wavelength overlap .

Network and Signal Considerations

  • When connecting multiple sensors, ensure wavelengths do not overlap and optical losses from fiber length and connections are within acceptable limits .
  • Use dedicated optical channels for each sensor or carefully plan series connections to maintain signal integrity.
  • For Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors, the connection method should preserve the wavelength response, as FBGs translate physical parameters directly into optical wavelength shifts .

Installation Tips

  • Secure fibers to prevent bending or stress that could degrade signal quality.
  • Choose mounting methods (gluing, welding, embedding, or bolting) based on the sensor type and the material of the structure being monitored .
