Sierra Leone is advancing its digital transformation with renewable-powered 5G networks and the SMART Sierra Leone Project, combining sustainable energy with expanded internet access.

Renewable-Powered 5G Network

Sierra Leone has launched its first 5G network powered entirely by renewable energy, a collaboration between local telecom Zoodlabs SL and CrossBoundary Energy . The network uses solar photovoltaic panels, battery storage, and backup generators, achieving 99.9% uptime while minimizing reliance on fossil fuels . This infrastructure provides ultra-fast, low-latency connectivity, enabling applications such as remote healthcare, e-learning, smart cities, and Internet of Things (IoT) solutions . Initial deployment includes five 5G towers in Freetown, with plans for nationwide expansion . The renewable-powered system meets approximately 83% of the network's electricity needs, setting a regional benchmark for sustainable telecom operations .

SMART Sierra Leone Project

In parallel, the government signed a $50 million agreement with China National Technical Import & Export Corporation to implement the SMART Sierra Leone Project . The project aims to:

• Expand internet connectivity to over 400,000 previously unconnected citizens
• Establish national data centers to manage and protect sovereign data
• Enhance security around critical state infrastructure in Freetown Additionally, the Digital Village Project, in partnership with Huawei, will provide rural communities and farmers with access to vital online information, improving agricultural productivity and market access . These initiatives are part of Sierra Leone's broader digital transformation strategy, aligned with the government's Big Five Agenda for technology and infrastructure development.

By integrating renewable energy with advanced internet infrastructure, Sierra Leone is addressing limited broadband access, which currently reaches only about 21% of the population . The combination of green energy and high-speed connectivity is expected to:
