Some outdoor variants include a steel wire messenger for aerial self-supporting runs . The flat design allows bending in the natural plane with minimal stress, while edge-on bending requires more force, reducing accidental kinks . Most butterfly cables use bend-insensitive single-mode fibers compliant with ITU-T G.657 standards, such as G.657.A1 or A2 .
