Butterfly-shaped optical cables are flat, wing-like fiber optic cables designed for indoor and outdoor use, offering flexibility, durability, and low signal loss.

Design and Structure

Butterfly-shaped optical cables feature a flat, wing-shaped cross-section with the optical fiber at the center and two parallel strength members on either side, typically made of Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) for non-metallic, EMI-resistant performance . Some outdoor variants include a steel wire messenger for aerial self-supporting runs . The flat design allows bending in the natural plane with minimal stress, while edge-on bending requires more force, reducing accidental kinks . Most butterfly cables use bend-insensitive single-mode fibers compliant with ITU-T G.657 standards, such as G.657.A1 or A2 .

Types of Butterfly Cables

  1. Indoor Butterfly Cables (GJXH):
    • FRP strength members only
    • LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen) sheath
    • Fiber counts: 1–12 cores
    • Lightweight, flexible, ideal for building entry points and risers
  2. Outdoor Self-Supporting Butterfly Cables (GJYXFCH/GJXFH):
    • FRP plus steel messenger wire
    • Can span up to 50 meters without external support
    • LSZH or PE outer sheath for UV and moisture protection
    • Suitable for aerial drops and pipeline applications
  3. Armoured Butterfly Cables:
    • Additional steel tape or armored layer for mechanical protection
    • Used in FTTH, CATV, and high-density networking
