Single-mode fiber has a core diameter of approximately 8–10 micrometers, which is significantly smaller than multimode fiber cores, typically 50–62.5 micrometers . This narrow core allows only one mode of light to propagate, minimizing modal dispersion and enabling signals to travel over long distances without significant loss . In contrast, multimode fiber supports multiple light paths, which can cause signal distortion over longer distances.

Wavelength and Standards

Single-mode fibers are designed to operate at cutoff wavelengths below 1260 nm, supporting telecommunications C-band (1550 nm) and O-band (1310 nm) windows . Common standards include ITU-T G.652 (G.652.D being the most versatile) and OS1/OS2 classifications, which define attenuation, bandwidth, and indoor/outdoor suitability . Physical Appearance

While visually similar to multimode fiber, single-mode fiber often has a yellow jacket in standard cabling conventions, whereas multimode fiber typically uses orange or aqua jackets . The small core is not visible to the naked eye, but cross-sectional inspection under a microscope reveals the single-mode core surrounded by cladding.

Performance Characteristics

Single-mode fiber is ideal for long-distance, high-speed communication, such as telecom backbones, data center interconnects, and FTTH deployments .
