Distribution Box Overview

A distribution box, also called a distribution board, DB box, or panelboard, is an electrical enclosure that receives power from the mains and distributes it to multiple branch circuits while providing protection through devices like MCBs, fuses, RCDs, or RCBOs . It ensures safe and organized power management, prevents overloads, short circuits, and earth faults, and protects both people and equipment . Typical components include busbars, neutral and earth bars, switches, isolators, and optional surge or leakage protection devices .

Main Distribution Box

The main distribution box is the primary hub where the incoming supply enters a building or facility. Its key functions include:

  • Distribution: Splits the main supply into multiple outgoing circuits.
  • Protection: Houses the main switch and protective devices to disconnect faulty circuits.
  • Isolation: Allows complete disconnection of power for maintenance or emergencies.
  • Connection and Containment: Organizes live, neutral, and earth conductors while protecting components from environmental hazards . The main box typically handles higher voltages (220V–690V) and larger currents, and it may feed several sub-boxes for different areas or systems .

Sub-distribution Box

A sub-box is a secondary distribution unit connected to the main box. Its purpose is to:

  • Extend power distribution to specific zones, floors, or equipment.
  • Reduce wiring complexity by localizing circuit management.
  • Provide additional protection for circuits in remote areas.
  • Allow easier maintenance without affecting the entire system . Sub-boxes usually contain smaller breakers or fuses and may include residual current devices for added safety. They are ideal for large buildings, industrial plants, or areas with high power demand.
