Optical Module Protection Mode

Optical Module Protection Mode ensures continuous service by switching traffic from a faulty working path to a pre-configured protection path.

Overview of Protection Modes

Optical module protection is designed to maintain service continuity in optical networks by providing a backup path for signals when the primary (working) path fails. The protection mechanism typically involves 1+1 protection, where the working and protection paths are simultaneously fed with signals, and the receiver selects the active path, or 1:1 protection, where the protection path remains idle until a fault occurs .

Types of Protection

  • 1+1 Protection: Both working and protection paths carry the same signal. The receiver continuously monitors both paths and switches to the protection path if the working path fails. This is commonly used in Optical Line Protection (OLP) for single optical transmission sections (OTS) or entire optical multiplex sections (OMS), .
  • 1:1 Protection: The protection path is idle under normal conditions. When the working path fails, traffic is switched to the protection path. This mode is more resource-efficient but may involve a slight delay during switching .

Switching Modes

  • Unidirectional Switching: Only the direction experiencing a fault switches to the protection path. Forward and reverse directions operate independently.
  • Bidirectional Switching: Both directions switch together to the protection path, ensuring consistent transmission and reception along the same trail, which simplifies management and maintenance .

Revertive vs Non-Revertive Modes

  • Revertive Mode: After the working path is restored and stable for a defined Wait-to-Restore (WTR) time, traffic automatically switches back to the working path. This prevents frequent toggling due to transient faults .
  • Non-Revertive Mode: Traffic remains on the protection path even after the working path is restored, unless the protection path fails or an external command triggers a switch back .

Implementation in Optical Modules

Optical modules, such as those in Cisco NCS 1001 systems, can be configured with Protection Switching Modules (PSM) to manage protection paths. The modules monitor optical power and signal presence, and the switching logic ensures that traffic is rerouted to the protection path when the working path experiences degradation or failure . In 1+1 OLP, the optical switch on the module selectively receives signals from the working path under normal conditions and switches to the protection path when a fault is detected .

Key Considerations

  • Ensure proper configuration of working and protection paths to avoid service interruptions.
  • Monitor optical power levels to prevent module damage, especially when using long-distance modules with high transmitted power .
  • Choose the appropriate switching and revertive mode based on network requirements and fault tolerance strategy. Optical module protection modes are essential for high-availability optical networks, providing rapid fault recovery and minimizing service disruption.
