Three Major Protections of Relay Protection

The three primary protections in relay protection are overcurrent protection, earth fault protection, and distance (impedance) protection.

1. Overcurrent Protection

Overcurrent protection safeguards electrical circuits when the current exceeds a preset limit, which can occur due to short circuits or overloads. Relays such as 50 (instantaneous) and 51 (time-delayed) relays detect excessive current and send a trip signal to the circuit breaker to isolate the faulted section, preventing equipment damage and maintaining system stability . This protection is widely used in feeders, transformers, and motors.

2. Earth Fault Protection

Earth fault protection detects leakage currents flowing to the ground, which may result from insulation failure or accidental contact. Relays monitor the current imbalance between phases and trigger the breaker if a fault to earth is detected. This type of protection is crucial for preventing electric shocks, fire hazards, and equipment damage .

3. Distance (Impedance) Protection

Distance protection, also called impedance protection, is commonly applied to transmission lines. It operates based on the measured voltage-to-current ratio (impedance) and isolates the faulted section when the impedance falls below a set threshold, indicating a short circuit or line fault. This protection ensures selective tripping and minimizes disruption to the rest of the power system .
