Optical Module Class Level

Optical modules are classified by data rate, form factor, wavelength, fiber type, and usability to ensure compatibility and performance in fiber optic networks.

Classification by Data Rate

Optical modules are categorized based on their transmission speed, which determines network capacity and application suitability:

  • 100 Mbps: Legacy systems
  • 1 Gbps (Gigabit): Standard enterprise networks
  • 10 Gbps: High-performance networks and data centers
  • 25/40/100 Gbps: Modern data centers and high-throughput applications
  • 200/400 Gbps: Emerging ultra-high-speed networking standards

Classification by Form Factor

The physical size and interface of optical modules affect compatibility with networking equipment:

  • SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable): Common for 1–10 Gbps
  • SFP+: Enhanced version for 10 Gbps
  • SFP28: Supports 25 Gbps
  • QSFP+ / QSFP28: Aggregation and core network applications (40–100 Gbps)
  • QSFP-DD / OSFP: High-speed modules for 400 Gbps and above Other older or specialized form factors include GBIC, XFP, X2, XENPAK .

Classification by Wavelength and Fiber Type

Optical modules are also classified by the type of fiber and wavelength used:

  • Single-mode fiber (SMF): Typically 1310 nm or 1550 nm, suitable for long-distance transmission
  • Multi-mode fiber (MMF): Typically 850 nm, suitable for short-distance, cost-effective applications
  • CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing): Wider wavelength spacing for medium distances
  • DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing): Narrow spacing for long-distance, high-capacity networks

Classification by Usability

Modules can be hot-pluggable, allowing insertion and removal without powering down the system (e.g., SFP, SFP+, XFP, XENPAK), or non-hot-pluggable (e.g., 1*9, SFF) which require system shutdown for replacement .

Additional Considerations

  • Transmission distance: Modules are designed for short, medium, or long reach, with optical power and fiber attenuation considerations
  • Standards compliance: GPON modules follow ITU-T G.984 standards, while Ethernet and data center modules follow IEEE and MSA specifications
  • Electrical interface: Modules may use analog NRZ, retimed digital, or analog coherent optics (ACO) interfaces depending on speed and application Understanding these classification levels helps in selecting the appropriate optical module for network performance, distance, and compatibility requirements.
