Methods for splicing Iranian fiber optic cables

Fiber optic cables can be spliced using two primary methods: fusion splicing for permanent, low-loss connections, and mechanical splicing for quick, temporary joins.

Fusion Splicing

Fusion splicing is the most common and reliable method for joining fiber optic cables. It involves melting the ends of two fibers using an electric arc to create a continuous optical path. This method is ideal for long-haul networks and high-performance applications because it produces minimal signal loss (typically around 0.1 dB or lower) and nearly zero back reflection . Steps for Fusion Splicing:

  1. Prepare the fibers by stripping the protective coating and cleaning the bare glass with alcohol wipes .
  2. Cleave the fibers using a precision cleaver to ensure a clean, perpendicular cut .
  3. Align the fibers in a fusion splicer, which uses core or cladding alignment technology to position the fibers accurately .
  4. Fuse the fibers with an electric arc, forming a permanent joint .
  5. Protect the splice with a heat-shrink sleeve or splice protector to restore mechanical strength .
  6. Test the splice using a visual fault locator (VFL) or optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) to confirm signal integrity . Fusion splicing is preferred for mission-critical networks, data centers, and long-distance telecommunications because of its durability and low insertion loss.

Mechanical Splicing

Mechanical splicing is a faster, less equipment-intensive method that aligns fiber ends within a specialized sleeve using an index-matching gel to bridge the microscopic gap between fibers . This method is suitable for temporary repairs, emergency fixes, or short-distance connections. Steps for Mechanical Splicing:

  1. Strip and clean the fiber ends to remove coatings and contaminants .
  2. Align the fibers manually in a mechanical splice holder with index-matching gel .
  3. Secure the fibers in place and protect the joint with heat-shrink tubing or a splice protector .
  4. Test the connection to ensure minimal signal loss, typically around 0.2–0.75 dB . Mechanical splicing is advantageous for quick deployment and situations where a fusion splicer is unavailable, but it is generally less reliable over the long term compared to fusion splicing.

Best Practices

  • Always work in a clean, dust-free environment to prevent contamination .
  • Ensure tools are calibrated and cleavers are sharp for precise cuts .
  • Practice on test fibers before working on live cables to avoid costly mistakes .
  • Use OTDR or VFL testing to verify splice quality and signal continuity . Both methods are widely used in telecommunications networks, including in Iran, for repairing damaged cables, extending network reach, and maintaining high-speed data transmission . The choice between fusion and mechanical splicing depends on performance requirements, budget, and whether the splice is temporary or permanent.
