Types of Fiber Optic Flow Sensors

1. Distributed Fiber Optic Sensors (DFOS): These systems use a continuous optical fiber as a sensor along the entire length of a pipe or wellbore. They can measure temperature, strain, and acoustic signals, which are then analyzed to infer flow rates. DFOS technologies include Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS), Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS), and Distributed Strain Sensing (DSS). They are widely used in geothermal wells, oil and gas pipelines, and industrial flow monitoring, providing high-resolution, real-time data over long distances without invasive instrumentation . 2. Single Mode-Multimode-Single Mode (SMS) Fiber Flowmeters: SMS sensors are based on interferometric principles and the hot-wire effect. A fiber-coupled laser heats the sensor, and the flow of fluid removes heat, causing a wavelength shift in the transmitted spectrum. This shift is proportional to the flow rate. SMS sensors are particularly useful in biomedical applications, such as spirometry, infusion therapy, and drug delivery, due to their small form factor, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and remote operation capability . 3. Commercial Fiber Optic Sensor Heads: Companies like KEYENCE offer fiber optic sensor heads (e.g., FU Series) that can be configured for thru-beam, reflective, retro-reflective, and definite reflective detection. These sensors are typically paired with an amplifier unit and are used in factory automation, harsh environments, and tight spaces. While primarily for object detection, some models can be adapted for flow monitoring when combined with appropriate optical setups .

Working Principles

  • DFOS: Laser pulses travel along the fiber, and backscattered light (Rayleigh, Raman, or Brillouin) is analyzed. Variations in temperature, strain, or acoustic signals along the fiber correlate with fluid flow characteristics .
  • SMS Flowmeters: Heat removal by fluid flow changes the optical path length, producing a measurable spectral shift. This allows precise flow quantification even in small or turbulent flows .
  • Fiber Optic Sensor Heads: Detect changes in light intensity or reflection caused by the presence or movement of a target, which can be adapted for flow detection in certain setups .

Applications

  • Industrial: Monitoring multiphase flows in pipelines, chemical processing, and energy systems.
  • Geothermal: Injection profiling and flow monitoring in Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) using DFOS to optimize water circulation and heat extraction .
  • Biomedical: Measuring fluid flow in catheters, infusion systems, and respiratory devices using SMS fiber flowmeters .
  • Automation and Harsh Environments: Object detection and flow monitoring in areas with electromagnetic interference or limited space .
