An integrated power supply converts input voltage into a stable, regulated output voltage or current through filtering, conversion, regulation, and output stages.

Overview

An integrated power supply (IPS) is a self-contained module that provides a regulated voltage and/or current to a load from an AC or DC source. The term "integrated" indicates that its components—such as transformers, rectifiers, filters, regulators, and sometimes switching devices—are miniaturized and packaged together, often on a single PCB or within a single IC, to simplify design and improve reliability .

Key Operational Stages

1. Input Filtering: The IPS first removes unwanted noise, transients, and voltage spikes from the incoming power. This ensures a clean and stable input for the subsequent conversion stages . 2. Conversion: The core function of the IPS is to convert the input voltage to the desired output form. This can include:

  • AC-to-DC conversion (rectification) using diodes or bridge rectifiers.
  • DC-to-DC conversion to step up or step down voltage levels.
  • DC-to-AC conversion (inversion) for applications requiring AC output . 3. Regulation: To maintain a stable output despite variations in input voltage, load current, or temperature, the IPS uses feedback mechanisms. The output voltage is continuously compared to a reference voltage, and the regulator adjusts the operation of the power stage to correct any deviations . 4. Output Filtering: After regulation, the output is filtered to remove residual ripple or noise, providing a clean DC voltage suitable for sensitive electronic loads .

Role of Switching Devices

Modern integrated power supplies often employ switching devices such as MOSFETs, BJTs, or IGBTs. These devices perform rapid on/off switching to efficiently convert energy from the input to the output. The switching is controlled by the regulation circuitry, allowing precise control of voltage and current while minimizing energy loss .
