Installation Method of Distribution Box and Switchboard

Switchboard installation in a distribution box involves careful preparation, secure mounting, proper wiring, and strict adherence to safety standards.

Preparation and Material Inspection

Before installation, all switchboard components and materials should be inspected for compliance with approved shop drawings and manufacturer specifications. Any damaged or non-conforming materials must be removed from the site. Ensure the installation area is clean, accessible, and ready for mounting, with adequate space for clearances and future maintenance .

Mounting the Switchboard

  • Positioning: Mount the distribution board at a standard height, typically 1800 mm from the finished floor to the top of the equipment, unless otherwise specified .
  • Clearances: Maintain at least 1 meter of clearance in front of the switchboard for safe operation and maintenance .
  • Fixation: Secure the switchboard independently of the wiring system using corrosion-resistant bolts, nuts, and washers. For surface-mounted boards, use trunking or conduit to route cables properly .
  • Enclosure: Ensure the switchboard enclosure provides protection against direct and indirect contact, following IP and IK ratings as per standards .

Busbar Installation

  • Main Busbar: Install the main busbar horizontally to distribute power between switchboard columns. Positioning can be top, middle, or bottom depending on design and customer specifications .
  • Distribution Busbars: Connect distribution busbars to the main busbar to supply outgoing circuits. Ensure proper insulation, secure fastening, and protection against direct contact .
  • Current Transformers (CTs): If required, install CTs on busbars to measure current safely for metering devices .

Wiring and Cable Termination

  • Cable Routing: Terminate PVC, SWA PVC, or MICS cables inside the enclosure using gland brackets or fabricated steel extension boxes. For flush installations, conductors should terminate behind the board; for surface mounting, use trunking or conduit .
  • Numbering and Identification: Number all terminals, cables, and components to match certified drawings for easy identification and maintenance .
  • Earthing: Ensure adequate earth continuity between all components and connect protective conductors to the grounding electrode system .

Safety Measures

  • Only qualified personnel should perform installation work, following NFPA 70E and manufacturer safety guidelines .
  • Disconnect and lock off all power before starting installation or maintenance .
  • Use internal partitions or place live parts out of reach to prevent direct contact .
  • Conduct safety induction and toolbox talks for all personnel involved in the installation .

Final Checks and Commissioning

  • Verify all components, wiring, and connections against approved shop drawings.
  • Inspect for proper clearances, secure mounting, and correct cable terminations.
  • After installation, instruct the supervising engineer and site manager on operation and programming of the switchboard.
  • Record all instructions and issue a Work Inspection Report (WIR) for consultant approval . By following these steps, the switchboard can be safely and efficiently installed in a distribution box, ensuring compliance with electrical standards and reliable operation.
