Optical cable sealing ensures fiber optic cables are protected from environmental hazards while maintaining signal integrity, using methods like epoxy-based hermetic seals, heat-shrink, and mechanical closures.

Hermetic Epoxy Sealing

Epoxy-based hermetic sealing, such as Douglas Electrical Components' OptiSeal™, provides a customizable, airtight seal directly on fiber optic cables without requiring bulkhead connectors . This method is suitable for single-mode, multimode, ribbon, armored, outdoor-rated, and mixed copper/glass fibers. The epoxy seal is validated for high-pressure operation (up to 8,000 psi) and exhibits extremely low vacuum leak rates (<1 x 10^-9 cc-He/sec), ensuring long-term reliability and minimal signal loss . Epoxy seals allow flexible configurations, including connectorization or leaving fiber ends exposed, reducing connection points that could degrade optical performance.

Fiber Splice Closure Sealing

For splice closures, the process involves several critical steps to maintain cable integrity and prevent fiber damage :

  1. Preparation: Clean the sealing groove of the splice closure with alcohol wipes.
  2. Sealing Strip Installation: Insert the sealing strip into the groove, ensuring tight attachment.
  3. Unused Ports: Wrap unused fiber ports with sealant slightly higher than the cross block by 2–3 mm.
  4. Cable Placement: Insert the optical cable into the fixed bracket without twisting or applying torque.
  5. Closure Assembly: Fasten the upper and lower halves of the closure, tightening bolts in a middle-first, diagonal sequence.
  6. Cable Management: Coil reserved cable with a minimum 1-meter diameter and place the closure in the center, protecting it with plastic cloth.
  7. Environmental Protection: When burying the closure, avoid sharp objects that could damage the cable or closure.

Heat-Shrink and Mechanical Sealing

Alternative sealing methods include heat-shrinkable sleeves and mechanical closures :

  • Heat-Shrinkable Seals: Contract when heated to form a tight, waterproof seal around the cable, protecting against moisture, dirt, and mechanical stress. They are durable and relatively easy to install but can be difficult to adjust once applied.
  • Mechanical Seals: Use clamps or screws to secure the closure housing, providing a physical barrier against environmental factors. Ideal for underground networks or centralized data centers where cables are rarely manipulated.

Best Practices

  • Ensure cables are not twisted or stressed during sealing to prevent fiber breakage.
  • Maintain minimum bend radius and proper coiling to avoid signal loss.
  • Choose sealing methods based on environmental exposure, such as outdoor, underground, or high-pressure conditions.
  • Verify hermetic integrity and perform insertion loss and reflection loss testing to ensure signal quality. By following these procedures, optical cable sealing protects fibers from moisture, dust, and mechanical damage, ensuring long-term network reliability and optimal signal performance .
