Lay temporary fiber optic cable

Temporary fiber optic cables should be laid carefully on the surface using figure-8 loops, protected from mechanical stress, and monitored to prevent kinking or excessive tension.

Planning and Preparation

Before laying a temporary fiber optic cable, plan the route and installation method. Identify potential hazards such as sharp rocks, edges, or high-traffic areas, and ensure the path is clear. Use protective materials if the cable will remain outdoors for more than 24 hours to prevent environmental damage, including UV exposure and moisture .

Surface Laying Techniques

For temporary deployments, fiber cables are often laid directly on the ground. To prevent twisting and kinking, use the figure-8 loop method:

  • Lay the cable in large loops (2–4 meters for stiff cables, 10–20 feet for longer runs) in a figure-8 pattern .
  • Slightly offset each loop from the previous one to minimize mechanical pressure.
  • Flip the loops so the end to be pulled next is on top. This technique reduces stress on the fibers and prevents permanent damage during handling or retrieval.

Handling and Protection

  • Pull, don't push the cable to avoid exceeding the minimum bend radius .
  • Avoid sharp turns, edges, or excessive bending.
  • Use plastic sheets or protective mats under the cable where it contacts the ground to keep it clean and reduce abrasion .
  • Monitor tension during any pulling operation to ensure it stays below the cable's maximum rated load, typically at least 2700 N for outdoor cables .

Temporary Anchoring

If the cable must remain in place for several hours or days, secure it at intervals to prevent movement, especially on slopes or uneven terrain. Avoid clamping too tightly, which can damage the outer sheath .

Retrieval and Storage

After temporary use, coiling the cable in figure-8 loops again helps prevent twists. Store reels on flat, firm surfaces, and keep protective coverings in place until the cable is reused or returned to storage .

Safety Considerations

  • Isolate the work area to prevent accidental damage or injury .
  • Ensure personnel handling the cable are trained in fiber optic safety, including wearing gloves and eye protection to avoid splinters . By following these practices, temporary fiber optic cables can be deployed safely and efficiently, maintaining performance and minimizing the risk of damage during short-term use.
