Overview

A network optical switch is a device that directs optical signals from one fiber path to another without converting them into electrical signals first, unlike traditional electronic switches that rely on optical-electrical-optical (OEO) conversions . By keeping data in its light form, optical switches reduce latency, power consumption, and signal degradation, making them ideal for high-performance networks, data centers, and AI architectures .

Types of Optical Switches

  1. All-Optical Ethernet Switches These switches have purely optical ports, eliminating electro-optical conversions entirely. They are commonly deployed in core, aggregation, or even access layers of fiber networks, supporting high-speed interfaces like 10G, 25G, 40G, 100G, and beyond . Benefits include simplified cabling, higher bandwidth, and improved reliability.
  2. Optical Circuit Switches (OCS) OCS devices optimize data center networks by minimizing electrical switches and OEO conversions.
