Where to plug the fiber optic cable into a telecom router

Fiber optic cables connect first to an Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which then links to your router via an Ethernet cable.

Step 1: Identify the Fiber Entry Point

Locate the fiber optic wall outlet or Fiber Termination Point (FTP) installed by your ISP. This is where the fiber line from outside your home enters your premises and is the starting point for the connection .

Step 2: Connect the Fiber Cable to the ONT

• Use the ONT provided by your ISP: The ONT converts the optical signal into an electrical signal that your router can understand .
• Insert the fiber cable carefully: Remove any protective caps from both the fiber cable and the ONT port. Align the connector using the key or tab and push it in until it clicks securely .

• Use an Ethernet cable: Connect one end to the ONT's LAN or Ethernet port (sometimes labeled “GE” or “LAN”) and the other end to your router's WAN or Internet port, which is often color-coded differently from other ports .
• Power on the router: Wait for the router's indicator lights to confirm a successful connection. You may need to log into the router's admin panel to configure ISP credentials or VLAN settings if required .

Step 4: Placement and Precautions

• Place both the ONT and router near electrical outlets and in a dry, ventilated area .
• Handle fiber cables carefully to avoid bending beyond the minimum radius or contaminating the connectors, as this can degrade signal quality .
